Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. How long does a mental health evaluation take?

Your initial psychiatric evaluation is 60 minutes. This comprehensive assessment gives us time to understand your symptoms, history, and create an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan. Follow-up appointments are typically 30 minutes for medication management or 45-50 minutes for therapy.

2. What's the difference between a mental health evaluation and regular therapy?

A psychiatric evaluation is a diagnostic assessment conducted by a medical provider (psychiatric nurse practitioner or psychiatrist). It focuses on diagnosing your condition and creating a treatment plan, including medication if needed. Regular therapy is ongoing counseling with a licensed therapist. Many people get an evaluation first to clarify their diagnosis, then continue with therapy, medication, or both.

3. Will I get a diagnosis after my evaluation?

Yes, if your symptoms meet diagnostic criteria. Your provider will explain your diagnosis in clear terms, what it means, and what treatment options are available. If you don't meet criteria for a specific diagnosis, we'll explain what we're seeing and recommend next steps.

4. Can I get a mental health evaluation online or does it have to be in-person?

Yes, online psychiatric evaluations are just as valid and effective as in-person evaluations. All our evaluations are conducted via secure HIPAA-compliant video from the comfort of your home. You must be physically located in California during your appointment.

5. Do I need a referral for a psychiatric evaluation?

No, you don't need a referral. You can schedule directly with us. We accept most major California insurance plans and will verify your benefits before your appointment.

6. What should I bring to my mental health evaluation?

Please bring: A list of current medications (including vitamins/supplements), any previous mental health records if available, names/contact info for current providers (primary care, therapist), and insurance card. But don't worry if you don't have everything—we can still conduct your evaluation.

7. Will my evaluation be covered by insurance?

Most major California insurance plans cover psychiatric evaluations. We verify your benefits before your appointment and will tell you your estimated cost. Many patients pay little to nothing with insurance ($0-50 copay typical).
